After a few years of coaching hundreds of smart, capable, talented, inquisitive, and overwhelmed professional human beings - and snagging my PCC-level ICF accreditation (thank you thank you)…I’ve got a couple learnings to share.

Prestige Goblins.

What is a Prestige Goblin?

Your Prestige Goblin (of which you may have more than one), is basically that hungry little bugger in your belly that drives your ambition.

The problem? We’re not always actually aligned with the Prestige Goblin.

It was usually created in response to mentors, friends, colleagues, work… a bit o’ childhood patterns.

Our Prestige Goblins might thrive on competition, power, looking good in the spotlight, some virtue-signaling and martyrdom.

I worked with a client many years ago and they had come to me with something specific. They wanted a very specific type of role in the next five years. But as we worked together… they didn’t actually want that role. Their Prestige Goblin did.

How does recognizing your Prestige Goblin help?

By recognizing our little Prestige Goblins within ourselves, we’re able to acknowledge when they’re showing up for us. Often, they’re trying to help. They’re offering support, focus and drive.

→ When I’m in a workout class? The Athlete Goblin is very much invited.

→ When I want to improve my craft as a coach? The Bookworm Goblin says go get your ICF certification.

→ When I’m overwhelmed? The Original Goblin will remind me journaling helps.

When do Prestige Goblins hold us back?

Other times? They’re holding us back.

Like when you’re giving everything externally and not setting any boundaries? The Giver might be driving you.

Or when you’re chasing that next promotion for a company you don’t even like? The Superstar might be distracting you.

You might find yourself competing with people who aren’t competing with you - and getting overwhelmed if The Athlete has anything to say about it.

Once we see them, name them, we can work with them. We can notice when one of our Prestige Goblins might be driving the bus.
